2019 Genesis G70 MPG Rating: EPA vs Real-World

The all-new Genesis G70 has proven it can fill a lot of shoes, performance being one of them and a well-covered topic, especially when benchmarked against the legendary BMW 3-Series that every sport-luxury automaker has been going after or at least desires to. On the other end is everyday practicality with gas mileage being a key metric to watch as more real-world data gets reported.

On paper, the EPA rating that ranges from 20-25 mpg's combined depending on your model of choice looks about right, reporting nothing amazing, coming close to disappointing, but most importantly far from being a deal breaker. In fact, its a trade-off for other areas the G70 excels in that helped to make its mark in this challenging segment, the latest being its new six-speed manual transmission. That purist spec drops down to 18 mpg city.

Want the most efficient G70 model? Forget having a manual transmission or AWD, the 2.0T with the eight-speed automatic transmission in RWD configuration is what you want, achieving 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway and 25 combined. Put into numbers that make sense to everyone, the edmunds.com mpg slider suggests this group of owners can expect average fuel costs of $1,600/year, a few hundred more than the 6-speed manual configuration. Real-world numbers should show a larger divide between automatic and manual transmission owners.

Early real-world numbers are showing a concerning number of owners are into the low 20's which is questionable because the G70 is lighter than the Kia Stinger it shares a powertrain with. But that's up for debate along with many other factors to discuss to get the most from either Korean automaker, or the segments both models compete in if you want a broader view.

If you look at any sports sedan model in this segment, you're never going to get very good fuel economy. Sure its a bit less than what you get in the MKZ, but that car is only offered with an inline 4. If you want he 3.3T and AWD, that's going to come with compromises.

Compared to the 3-Series its not that great but this was so Genesis could test the waters till they come out with better powertrains.

Most buyers aren't going to be all that concerned with the fuel economy of this car or any in this class. At least with the G70 you have more than one powertrain to choose from if that's a factor. The automatic comes with some noticeable improvement to mpg.
