Do we always have to unplug the USB before restarting the engine?

In the 2019 multimedia system manual on page 2-11, it says: "Connect the USB device after turning on the engine. The USB device may become damaged if it is already connected when the ignition is turned on."

Have any of you repeatedly started the engine with the USB plugged in without ill effects? I wonder how many cycles of alternating stress the USB port can take of me wiggling the stick in and out to follow this guideline.

My USB with MP3 files has been plugged in since a month after buying my G70 9 months ago. No problem.
Thanks a lot. That was useful info.
My iPhone sounds terrible if I don’t unplug it each time I shut the car off then back on. I am running the latest software version on the phone and the car
I leave my usb drive plugged in all the time with my music library. No issues, except that if I was playing usb music when i shutoff the car, it takes about 30 secs before it will start playing again. It's not immediate like the radio/xm.

Mine does that “sometimes”. Usually if I haven’t driven for a couple of days. Other times the music starts right away. I have no idea why this difference occurs.

I have this figured out. If you are playing usb media and leave the volume UP when you turn off the car, it will play immediately upon startup. But if you have the volume muted and turn off the car, it will wait about 30-40 secs before playing the media.
