The Genesis G70 continues to impress with its successful blend of sportiness and luxury. Yesterday it was announced that the G70 would be receiving another distinction, claiming the 2019 North American Car of the Year award.

Hyundai has proven that their young luxury brand is more than capable of bringing the fight to established German rivals. It beat out the Honda Insight and Volvo S60/V60, which were the two finalists in the category.

Fifty-four jurors cast their votes on respective winners in each class, coming from a variety of different automotive publications and websites across the United States and Canada. This annual award is reserved for a car that sets new benchmarks for design, innovation, safety, performance, and dollar value.

While there were doubts that the Korean brand could succeed in such a competitive segment, Genesis’ driver-focused luxury sedan not only meets the established criteria but in many ways improves upon it. We expect that this new, impressive vehicle will serve as an aspirational halo vehicle for all future models from the brand.

This is just a simple acknowledgment of Hyundai's impressive progress that they have been making with the Genesis sub-brand. While it doesn't prove reliability, you can look to early reviews to see just how impressed auto journalists have been with it so far. The only criticisms I see from consumer reports is lackluster fuel economy.

Personally I've been impressed with the progress that Genesis has made in such a short period of time. Not only is the G70 looking to be a better version of the Stinger, but they also have a heavily refreshed G80 on the horizon as well.

NA Car of the Year is not just a simple recognition from an individual publication. This is an industry wide achievement and the fact that it was able to beat out the more established, leading German brands is a big accomplishment.

G70 wasn't off to the right start even at the most fundamental point which is its aged platform.

What we have here is a model to test the waters, do a number of things good but nothing truly greatly, thus a crossover would be better.

We don't need more crossovers. Hyundai already has a plethora of them in their stable. The G70 is a statement product that a Korean brand can in fact deliver luxury, performance vehicles that are on par to that of German rivals.

Genesis doesn't have them and that's the issue. Hyundai has made it very clear they want to separate the brands much like you see Lexus and Toyota, Acura and Honda, VW and Audi, and so on. Its part of staying competitive and part of making what they can of a hot luxury market.
After all, its lucrative enough to make Lamborghini launch the Urus, and Ferrari seriously consider rivaling it.
